Went
to yet another memorial service yesterday, this one for Jody Bush, who
was second-in-command at the Berkeley Public Library when Claudia and I
worked there (I worked as a substitute). From her obituary in the SF
Chronicle:
On
the side, she was a peace activist. She was as tactful as she was
determined, and had a sense of whimsy that endeared her to all,
especially her thirteen grandchildren. At the memorial, the eldest of
these spoke movingly about his relief at having a grandmother he could
come out to.
We will miss her.

planning to go to this: Mobilization for Climate Justice rally at
Richmond BART station Saturday, Aug. 15 at 11:30 am, march on Chevron at
1:00 pm followed by nonviolent civil disobedience. I'm just going to
the rally, I'm not a-marching any more, cause of my knees. For more
info: mcjbay@gmail.com. I had asthma when I was a kid, so I have a special place in my heart for actions against air polluters like Chevron.

activist Jennifer Berezan on Sunday, August 16, at 10:45 am at the
Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarians & Universalists (this is their
regular Sunday service) at Cedar and Bonita.
And
this: Watershed Environmental Poetry Festival at Berkeley’s Civic
Center Park, Saturday, September 26, noon to 4 pm. This is put on by
River of Words, so there will be young poets from their school programs
as well as folks like Robert Hass and Richard Silberg. Also an open

LIBRARIANS: INFO JUNKIES TRYING TO GET YOU HOOKED TOO
As
a librarian in Washington, D.C., Providence, R.I, and Berkeley, Jody
was passionately committed to providing public service. She helped
start a librarians' union, lobbied for disabled access to libraries,
championed taking books into prisons for inmates, and established a
bookmobile program. She promoted ESL and adult literacy programs,
inclusion of gay literature in libraries, and diversity on library
staffs.
