I
wrote a song yesterday, sang it to Claudia over the phone and she made a
tune change suggestion, which I took. Then I made a lead sheet and a
pdf, sent it out to a few folks, tried it out on my fellow writing class
students last night. This morning I discovered it sounded better on the
uke than the guitar, which is good because it’s a song for singing on
beaches. I just made the recording and I’ll email it out too. You can
hear it right now—click the play button above.
WE DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND
We draw a line in the sand,
And we say no more!
We will protect our ocean,
We will protect our shore.
Chorus
What part of NO
Don’t you understand?
We will protect ourselves,
We draw a line in the sand.
You want to take your profits
And leave the mess to us
We say no to Big Oil—,
We say yes to the bus.
Chorus
We say yes to the birds
We say no to BP
We say we don’t need—
Any oil from the sea
Chorus

Here’s
the back story: I got an email about an action this Saturday, June 26,
against off-shore oil drilling. It started in Florida and has gone
world-wide, thanks to 350, MoveOn, Audubon, and other organizations. Go
to the Hands Across the Sand website
find the location near you. You don’t need a beach, though I’ll be at
Crown Memorial Beach in Alameda. The gatherings start at eleven, then
everybody lines up and joins hands for fifteen minutes starting at noon.
