Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

You're Crazy

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1958 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1986. In the Table of Contents to her songbook Song in My Pocket Malvina writes "...the psychiatric song. A sermon in Los Angeles' great First Unitarian Church was the spark for this. About the same time, altogether independently, and in another part of the country, appeared, 'I Don't Want to Get Adjusted.' When the time comes for a song, there it is, sometimes even in two places at once." To introduce her song in Sing Out! in 1950 Malvina wrote: "Here is a good critique of modern psychology and contemporary politics. It isn't you who has to adjust to the system; make it adjust to you. Sing it with a twinkle in your eye, a worried frown on your face and a lilt in your voice."

It's the people in the crazy house that's sane,
It's the people on the outside that haven't got a brain,
If you really feel at ease in ca-razy times like these
You're ca-razy.

If dropping bombs is your idea of fun,
If you're truly represented by the quacks in Washington,
If you read the daily press without screaming "What a mess!"
You're ca-razy.

Oh it isn't that you think you are a duck,
And it isn't that your mother was frightened by a truck,
Our whole world is on the blink and that's what makes you think
You're ca-razy.
